Why musicians go broke after fame — DJ Neptune

Abdullateef Fowewe

Nigeria disc jockey, Imohiosen Patrick, known as DJ Neptune, has disclosed why musicians can’t seem to stay afloat financially after their fame.

The DJ Neptune in his opinion said that artists feel like their fame lasts forever so they fail to invest and dive deep into business opportunities aside from music, stating that since they have this thought at the back of their minds, Nigerian musicians spend excessively without recourse to tomorrow.

He said, “Artistes feel fame is forever; that’s why some of them, while they are at their peak, don’t save up their money, they don’t invest. I was with somebody the other day, and the person was saying these artistes that collect advance payments, they collect it and go and buy Benz. Is that not your future you are driving?

“That’s why I tell some of my colleagues, that while you are on top, invest your money. If it’s properties you want to do, just have a side income.”

He further stated that only view artists have the grace to make their careers last more than five years.

“It is only a few of us that have the grace to be in the game for more than five, ten years. You are appealing to a certain age group, and if you don’t know how to tone down and switch, you might have missed your way,” he added.
