The former head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Finidi George, has shed light on the team’s recent performance improvements under the leadership of the new interim coach, Augustine Eguavoen.
Following a tumultuous period marred by disappointing results, including a loss to the Benin Republic, George’s resignation paved the way for a fresh start.
Under the leadership of Eguavoen, the Super Eagles won over their West African rivals, Benin on Saturday, where Ademola Lookman scored a brace and Victor Osimhen crowned the team efforts with an awe-mazing goal to secure three points for the team.
In a recent interview, George emphasised that the new coach benefiting from the improved morale of the players, admitting that he struggled to get the squad into peak condition to maximise their performance because he took over when the team was on break and some players were just coming back from vacation for the two games he handled (South Africa and Benin Republic games) before his resignation.
He stated that Football relies on fitness, but he claimed to have met the team when they were still in holiday mode.
He said, “I wish they had played like that when I was coach. Based on the result, they performed very well. I’m happy they won. I believe we would have defeated Benin if they had played this way two months ago.
“But it’s understandable, I took over when the team was on break. Some players were just coming back from vacation for the South Africa and Benin Republic games.
“Football relies on fitness, and unfortunately, I met the squad when they were still in holiday mode.”
Dailyeconomy on July 3, reported that George has been unveiled as the new head coach of Rivers United Football Club; a club that exists under the Nigerian Premier Football League.
