Winners emerge at Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Annual Essay Competition

Winners have emerged at the Consolidated Hallmark Insurance (CHI) 13th Annual Essay Competition for students offering insurance and actuarial science in higher institutions of learning in the country in Lagos.

The winners who were from different higher institutions across the country were announced at an awards ceremony in Lagos on Friday, well attended by the regulator and other chieftains in the industry.

Winners announced for the internal category are: 1st prize winner for CHI essay competition Jane Ibebuike; 2nd prize winner, Yemisi Olawoye; and 3rd prize winner, Omans Thompson.

Winners for the external category are 3rd prize winner for CHI essay competition, Hassan Jamiu Temitope; 2nd prize winner, Nzeocha Gift Omoga; and 1st prize winner Waliyat Badmus.

The Head, National Insurance Commission, Lagos Regional Office, Dr. Julius Odidi, who represented the Commissioner for Insurance, NAICOM, said, “the CHI award is promoting insurance education, awareness and participation, kudos to the organisers and congratulations to awardees.”

The President, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers, Mr Babatunde Oguntade, said that apart from being the bedrock of the economy, insurance offers immediate employment. He also hinted at further collaboration with the CHI award through a brokers’ award category. Oguntade urged the awardees to consider having a profession in insurance broking.

President, Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, Mrs Yetunde Ilori, said the award aligns with her education agenda, and congratulated all the participants. She urged them not to stop at writing essay, but should make inquiries on how to write professional exams in the insurance industry.

While congratulating the internal awardees, she said, “CHI is a place to be, a place where you have future, to develop your career.” And for the external awardees, she said, “What CHI is telling you is that the insurance industry is a prosperous industry, forward looking industry were you can develop a career for yourself, to let you know when you are out of the university, this industry is an industry to join.”

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Limited, Mrs Mary Adeyanju, said the award which started as an internal essay, has grown to become a national award. “We have gotten winners from all the geo-political zones in this country,” she said.

Former Rector, College of Insurance, Dr Yesida Oyetayo, who is on the  panel of judges, said, “This essay competition has grown bigger and better every years, and the quality of the reports were much better.”

The 2023 edition marks the 13th edition. Besides fostering deeper knowledge of insurance and encouraging innovative thinking among participants, the topics are diligently arrived at, in a bid to ensure the research work addresses pertinent issues in technology, the economy and other areas of impact.  

Over the years, winners have emerged from higher institutions of learning spread across various geo-political zones in the country. Institutions that have produced winner include The University of Lagos, University of Uyo, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Lagos State Polytechnic, Isolo, Imo State University, Owerri, Afe Babalola University, amongst others.

Students of insurance in higher institutions nation-wide now keenly look forward to call for entries to take part in the competition not only for the cash prize but also to deepen their knowledge, and the possibility of employment for winners.

Past 1st Prize Winners of the competition automatically got offer of employment to join the services of the company and they all took advantage of the offer and have contributed their quota to the growth of the organisation.

They have proved themselves in the course of their work, thus attesting to the fact that their winning was not a fluke. We shall have the opportunity of listening to one of them in the course of this event. It is also gratifying to mention that some of the past winners so employed and groomed have subsequently made their talents available to other companies in the industry.

From an initial N150,000, N100,000 and N50,000 respectively for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize winners, the winning prize has been increased over the years to N250,000, N150,000 and N100,000.

In view of the prevailing economic situation and to further deepen participation in the process, with effect from the 2023 edition, the winning prize has now been increased to N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand)  N300,000  (Three Hundred Thousand)  and N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand) for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize winners respectively.
