Thousands of Nigerian workers gathered at Eagle Square, Abuja on Thursday, to commemorate International Workers’ Day, organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.

The rally featured workers from diverse sectors dressed in colorful uniforms representing their professions.

The event took place under tight security with personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and Civil Defence Corps ensuring order.

Key issues addressed included the implementation of the new minimum wage, workers’ welfare, and the broader economic hardships facing the nation, such as inflation and rising living costs.

Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a N70,000 minimum wage, many states and private organisations have yet to implement it, intensifying workers’ calls for economic justice amid a 23.18% inflation rate and soaring food prices, Dailyeconomy reports.

The May Day celebration carried the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship,” highlighting workers’ resilience and dedication despite ongoing challenges.
