Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 general election, Peter Obi has unleashed a scathing critique against former activists of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), accusing them of betraying the democratic ideals they once championed against military dictator General Sani Abacha in the 1990s.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Obi lamented the irony of these “defenders of democracy” now acting as its “destroyers.”
He wrote, “Yesterday defenders of democracy, today’s destroyers, What a shame.”
Obi drew a historical parallel, stating, “What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed.”
He further asserted that “Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character.”
The statement underscores Obi’s ongoing push for political accountability amid Nigeria’s turbulent governance landscape.
