A severe flood has ravaged the Gumi and Bukkuyum Local Government Areas of Zamfara State, turning many residents into homeless.
This was revealed in a post on Monday by the National Emergency Management Agency on its X (formally Twitter) handle.
The disaster occurred due to heavy rainfall on August 15 and 16 submerging large areas of farmland, houses, and shops in the communities.
The post notes, “NEMA, Sokoto Operations Office SOO conducted an on-the-spot assessment of several communities that were severely affected by the flood.
“The flood which rendered many people homeless was a result of heavy rainfall that fell throughout the night of 15th to 16th of August, 2024. The Disaster happened across several communities at the same time and submerged large hectares of farmlands, houses and shops.
“Many houses were destroyed, many walls fell and others were inundated by flooded waters. The overwhelming impact of the incident has created a serious humanitarian situation in the axis, with many people displaced and currently taking shelter with their relatives and neighbours. The assessment exercise was conducted in conjunction with Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency, Red Cross, local government council representatives and security operatives.”
