Atlético Madrid striker, Julián Álvarez has apologised to the club’s supporters for remarks he made during the 2026 World Cup, in which he expressed a desire to leave the club amid links with Barcelona.

Speaking to Movistar after scoring the winner in Atlético’s 1-0 LaLiga victory over Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday, the Argentina international said, “I wanted to apologize to our fans for my words during the World Cup. They were a mistake. Both the way I said them and the timing.”

Álvarez added that he fully understood the anger directed at him.

“Especially because I understand why the fans were angry. I would have been angry too if I were a fan. Even more so considering how much they’ve supported me. They’ve been very generous, and I really appreciate that.”

The 26-year-old, who joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, also thanked his teammates for their support during a difficult period and said he is gradually returning to form.

“I’m gradually feeling better. I’ve been feeling better in the last few matches, both physically and on the ball. I want to help the team and give my best. Hopefully, through hard work and humility, I can turn this situation around.”

During the World Cup, Álvarez publicly indicated that he believed it would be best for Atlético to sell him, fuelling speculation about a move to Barcelona.

The Catalan club made a significant offer, but Atlético refused to sell their key forward to a domestic rival.

The comments sparked strong backlash from Atlético supporters, who whistled and jeered him at the start of the season.

Tensions had begun to ease in recent weeks as Álvarez found the net, including goals against Stuttgart in the Champions League and the decisive strike against Deportivo.
