Arsenal have had a verbal bid of under €70m (£60m) for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães swiftly rebuffed by the north-east club, sources confirm.

Newcastle insist they will not entertain offers for the 28-year-old Brazilian, who has become a central figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield since his arrival.

The club’s stance is clear: Bruno is not for sale this summer and Newcastle plan to keep their core midfield intact as they prepare for another campaign.

The rejection comes amid a wider scramble for Newcastle’s midfield assets.

The Magpies are also bracing for interest in Sandro Tonali, Bruno’s midfield partner, who is being tracked by Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City this transfer window.

Newcastle face a fight if they are to retain both players, with rival clubs expected to pursue moves in the coming weeks.

For now, Bruno Guimarães remains a Newcastle player as the summer transfer market heats up.
