Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing while observing a training session for the club’s second team.
The club says he is undergoing thorough examinations and will remain under medical supervision.
In a statement on Friday, Bayern confirmed that Kompany “had to receive medical attention on Friday after collapsing during a training session of FC Bayern’s second team.”
The club added that the first-team coach “had been watching the second team’s training session” when the incident occurred.
Bayern said, “Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical supervision.”
Until further notice, his coaching staff will handle “training and matchday operations.”
Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl addressed the situation shortly after the club’s announcement, stressing that the manager’s recovery comes before football matters.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure that he recovers quickly!” he noted.
Eberl added that Kompany would receive full support and time to recover.
“Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs. His coaching staff, whom we trust completely, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery,” he added.
Bayern did not disclose the cause of the collapse or provide a timetable for Kompany’s return.
The club said only that he would remain in medical care while assessments continue.
Kompany’s assistants are expected to lead Bayern’s preparations and matchday duties in the interim, including ahead of the club’s upcoming Bundesliga fixture at Freiburg.
