The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to tackle human trafficking and the illegal trade in endangered species.
This was made known in a statement obtained from NCS on Wednesday.
Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, made the pledge on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by a NAPTIP delegation to the Customs House in Maitama, Abuja.
“We believe in the power of collaboration. We can achieve more with less when we work together,” Adeniyi said, highlighting the need for joint efforts due to Nigeria’s security challenges.
He underscored that Customs sees crimes not just as smuggling but as broader national security issues.
He also revealed, “The Service has intensified its work on environmental sustainability and the enforcement of international conventions regarding flora and fauna,” and assured full cooperation on a national dialogue regarding human trafficking and stowaway incidents set for February 2026.
“We will accept your request for partnership unconditionally. We will work with your designated officials on the February summit and explore wider interventions that reinforce national security,” he added.
NAPTIP’s Director-General, Binta Adamu, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration noting, “I am happy today that I finally made it here and held this discussion with the Comptroller-General. We are a law enforcement agency with mandates to prevent, prosecute and protect. Partnership with Customs is essential for our work.”
She underlined the evolving nature of human trafficking and the critical need for coordination across Nigeria’s entry and exit points.
Former NIMASA Director of Public Relations, Lami Tumaka, who facilitated the visit, stressed the importance of Customs in border management and maritime enforcement.
“Your officers are often the first line of defence against illicit movement of goods and persons. Your expertise and nationwide presence are indispensable,” Tumaka said.
