Owner of X formerly Twitter, Elon Musk has announced on Monday that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in the United States next year, describing the move as the start of a series of such distributions.
In a post on X, the SpaceX and Tesla CEO wrote, “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”
The pledge could involve roughly 72 million shares, based on U.S. Census Bureau figures showing about 72 million children under 18 as of mid-2025.
At SpaceX’s recent closing price of around $146 per share, the giveaway would be worth approximately $10.5 billion.
Musk did not provide details on how the shares would be distributed, eligibility criteria, timing within the year, or whether they would be held in custodial accounts for minors.
Legal, tax, and administrative questions remain open.
The announcement followed Anthropic’s disclosure of plans for a Public Benefit Fund that would set aside a portion of its equity.
Musk had publicly recommended that Anthropic give shares “directly to the public” and indicated he would take a similar approach himself.
SpaceX completed its initial public offering in June 2026, becoming one of the largest IPOs in history.
The company, which develops rockets, spacecraft, and the Starlink satellite constellation, has a market valuation in the range of about $2 trillion.
Musk remains its largest shareholder, with a substantial stake that includes billions of shares.
The proposed gift would represent a small fraction of his holdings but would still mark one of the largest individual share distributions aimed at young Americans.
It builds on earlier smaller-scale efforts, including pledges by SpaceX executives to contribute stock toward accounts for children from lower-income families.
