Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has thrown his weight behind efforts to expand insurance coverage, commending the Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) for championing awareness nationwide. Receiving an NCRIB delegation led by President Mrs. Ekeoma Ezeibe at his Nvosi home in Isiala Ngwa South on Monday, Otti described insurance as a critical shield for individuals, businesses and investments against unexpected shocks. He stressed that boosting public trust in the industry would drive wider participation and strengthen economic security across Abia.
The governor said regulators and operators must stay closely engaged with citizens and stakeholders to build confidence and deliver real value. He welcomed the planned launch of the Insurance Penetration Initiative in Abia, noting it would directly benefit the state’s large community of traders, entrepreneurs and manufacturers who face daily business risks. According to him, insurance gives people and companies peace of mind knowing support is available when losses or disruptions occur, which is vital for sustaining growth.
NCRIB President Mrs. Ekeoma Ezeibe explained that Abia was chosen to pilot the 2026 Insurance Penetration Initiative because of Governor Otti’s proven commitment to development and economic policy. She was in the state for the council’s Chief Executive Officers’ Retreat and the formal launch of the programme. Ezeibe also praised the administration’s record on roads, security, power and economic revival in Aba, calling Abia a model for sustainable growth.
She said the NCRIB under her “One Insurance Industry” mantra has seen the need for the industry to present an holistic front in combating the barriers of growth facing the industry, rather than facing it separately. She noted that the idea was what informed the invitation and presence of the Commissioner for Insurance and heads of all constituent bodies of the industry for the visit.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin applauded Otti’s agenda and described Abia as a key industrial hub. He highlighted the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025, which strengthens consumer protection and created the Insurance Policyholders Protection Fund to safeguard clients’ interests. Omosehin assured the state of NAICOM’s full support for awareness campaigns and adoption drives, saying the NCRIB initiative is a major step toward a more resilient economy.
Otti reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to partner with insurance sector players and pledged backing for policies that promote financial security and inclusive growth. He said government would work with NCRIB and NAICOM to ensure traders, artisans and small businesses in Aba and beyond understand and access insurance products. With Abia positioning itself as a commercial powerhouse, the governor argued that deeper insurance penetration would protect livelihoods and attract more investment.
