Human rights group warns against political violence ahead of 2027 elections

Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide has called for free, fair, and peaceful elections in 2027, condemning political intimidation, threats, and thuggery targeting Nigerian voters.
Speaking in Abuja, the group urged political parties, leaders, supporters, and all Nigerians to uphold democratic principles and ensure credible elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
The organisation stressed that every eligible voter has the constitutional right to make an independent choice at the ballot without fear, coercion, or violence.
GTI’s Chairman, Comrade Bibi Oduku, said, “Every eligible Nigerian has the right to vote for the candidate or political party of his or her choice. Nobody should be threatened, intimidated, harassed or subjected to humiliation simply because of the way they choose to exercise their civic responsibility.”
The group denounced alleged threats, harassment, and coercion directed at citizens over their political preferences, warning that such acts violate fundamental human rights.
Oduku cautioned youths and students against being used by politicians to perpetrate violence or unlawful activities for personal or political gain.
“Politics and voting are matters of choice. No citizen should be forced to support or vote for a particular candidate or political party through threats or intimidation. Elections should be conducted through peaceful participation, dialogue and respect for the rule of law,” he added.
GTI announced it will intensify programmes on “Abstaining from Electoral Violence and Political Thuggery” before 2027, focusing on political education, peacebuilding, and human rights awareness.
The initiative aims to promote peaceful coexistence among supporters of different parties and sensitise the public on the dangers of electoral violence.
The group also encouraged citizens to respect the role of security agencies during elections, cooperate with lawful measures, and promptly report cases of intimidation, violence, or corruption to authorities and credible human rights organisations.
Oduku concluded by urging Nigerians to reject violence and allow the 2027 electoral process to be driven by peace, freedom of choice, tolerance, and the rule of law.
