Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has sympathised with China following the May 22, 2026 gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi Province, which killed at least 82 miners and injured more than 120, China’s deadliest mining disaster in over a decade.

“Given the numerous casualties among miners caused by the mining accident in Shanxi Province, we feel profound grief,” Araghchi wrote on X.

“I, on behalf of the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran, extend our deepest condolences and sincere sympathies to the friendly Government and people of the People’s Republic of China, especially to the families of the deceased.

“We sincerely wish the families of the deceased strength in their mourning and the injured a speedy recovery.”

The message, posted in Chinese, underscored diplomatic solidarity between Iran and China.

The disaster — the deadliest Chinese mining accident in more than ten years — has prompted national rescue and investigation efforts as officials work to account for victims and determine the cause of the explosion.
