LAWMA issues intention-to-seal notices to defaulting Oshodi market premises

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has deepened its ongoing environmental compliance drive with the service of Intention to Seal Notices on defaulting premises and sections of Oshodi Market found to be in violation of the Lagos State environmental sanitation laws.
The notices were served on Monday by LAWMA’s Project WISE team during a monitoring and compliance operation carried out across the market, following persistent indiscriminate disposal of waste, poor environmental sanitation practices and non-compliance with approved waste management regulations.
Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin said that the exercise formed part of the Authority’s sustained strategy of promoting environmental compliance across major commercial corridors, markets and business districts in Lagos.
A statement from the Director, Public Affairs, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mukaila Sanusi, today said he noted that the affected premises were issued the notices after repeated environmental advocacy, compliance engagements and monitoring exercises failed to achieve the desired level of adherence to the provisions of the Lagos State environmental laws.
“The Intention to Seal Notices provide the affected traders and business operators with another opportunity to take immediate corrective action and comply with the prescribed environmental sanitation requirements before further enforcement measures are implemented,” he stated.
Dr. Gbadegesin stressed that indiscriminate waste disposal, failure to maintain clean surroundings and other environmental infractions constituted serious violations capable of undermining public health, environmental sustainability and the aesthetics of the city.
He urged market associations, traders and business owners to maintain proper sanitation around their premises, patronise only assigned PSP operators and ensure proper bagging and disposal of waste through approved channels.
The LAWMA Managing Director reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to combining sustained public enlightenment with firm but fair enforcement to encourage responsible environmental behaviour, protect public infrastructure and support the Lagos State Government’s vision of a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city.
