Manchester United have confirmed Michael Carrick as their new caretaker manager, securing the 44-year-old club icon until the end of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The appointment comes amid ongoing turbulence at the helm, with Carrick stepping in to steady the ship following a string of disappointing results.

Sources close to the negotiations reveal a verbal agreement was reached as early as yesterday, January 12, but all contractual details have now been finalised.

Carrick, who retired from playing in 2022 after a storied career that included five Premier League titles, Champions League glory, and over 460 appearances for United, brings instant familiarity and respect to the dressing room.

The deal also includes key backroom staff from Carrick’s existing setup, ensuring a seamless transition.

This bolsters his support network, which previously guided Middlesbrough to the Championship play-off final last season during his tenure as head coach there.

Carrick’s first game in temporary charge will be this weekend’s Premier League clash against in-form Manchester City, where fans hope his tactical acumen and man-management skills—honed under legends like Sir Alex Ferguson—can spark a revival.

His interim role mirrors his brief stint in December 2021, when he took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and delivered three wins in four games before handing over to Ralf Rangnick.

United sit mid-table after a rocky start to the season, with pressure mounting on the board to appoint a long-term successor.
