Manchester United’s 15-year-old JJ Gabriel makes historic first-team debut

Manchester United’s academy sensation, JJ Gabriel has made history, becoming the youngest player ever to feature for the club’s first team in an unofficial match during the team’s pre-season tour.

The 15-year-old forward, who turned 15 in October 2025, came on in United’s pre-season friendly against Atletico Madrid, marking a milestone in his meteoric rise through the club’s youth ranks.

Gabriel’s appearance breaks the previous record for the youngest first-team player in an unofficial game, with the club’s all-time youngest official debutant still standing as David Gaskell, who debuted at 16 years and 19 days in 1956.

Manchester United head coach, Michael Carrick, who has overseen Gabriel’s integration into first-team training, praised the teenager’s progress and reiterated United’s commitment to developing young talent.

“I’m happy to give a chance to young talents, they deserve it,” Carrick said, echoing the club’s confidence in Gabriel as a special prospect.

Carrick has previously described Gabriel as a “big talent” and stressed the importance of patience in managing his development, but also highlighted the value of early exposure to senior football.

Rapid rise through the academy
Gabriel’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

In April 2025, at just 14, he became the youngest player to feature for United’s U18 side, scoring twice on debut in a 13-1 win over Leeds United.

He followed that with a standout 2025–26 campaign, netting 20–23 goals across U18 Premier League matches and earning the inaugural U18 Premier League Player of the Season award.

The England youth international, who wears number 77, has already trained with the senior squad and is eligible for Premier League action from the 2026–27 season.
