NAFDAC vows to sanction bakers using saccharine for bread

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a stern warning to bakers in Nigeria against using saccharine, stating that any baker found using it will be sanctioned.
Saccharine is an artificial sweetener, in bread production.
The agency in a statement by its Director-General, Mojisola Adeyeye, made it clear that the use of saccharine in bread is not permitted under the Nigerian Industrial Standard and the Codex General Standard for Food Additives.
The sanction threat to bakers using saccharine was contained in a remark NAFDAC purposely used to distance itself from videos claiming that the agency warned Nigerians to avoid eating bread due to the use of saccharine by some producers in the country.
NAFDAC in the remark, clarified that it never made such an announcement, emphasising that the agency has never advised Nigerians to avoid consuming the bread produced in the country.
The release reads, “The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is aware of a video circulating on social media, which falsely claims that The agency has raised concerns about bread safety in Nigeria. The video which suggests that NAFDAC advised Nigerians to avoid bread due to the use of saccharine by some producers, does not reflect the observations of NAFDAC during the stakeholders’ engagement on August 16, 2024, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
