Nigeria, Czech Republic deepen ties on security, economy at UNGA 81

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, held bilateral talks with Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka on the margins of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on 23 September 2026.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this in a press statement.
The meeting “reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to further deepen their longstanding bilateral relations through enhanced political dialogue, expanded economic cooperation and stronger collaboration on regional and global issues.”
Both sides underscored the need for regular consultations between their foreign ministries to sustain high-level exchanges.
Discussions focused on economic partnerships, with Nigeria highlighting investment opportunities in industry, infrastructure, technology and innovation.
The Nigerian minister encouraged greater participation by Czech businesses, while both sides recognised trade and investment as key drivers of cooperation.
On defence and security, the ministers “welcomed the growing collaboration between both countries and explored avenues for expanded cooperation in support of Nigeria’s counter-terrorism and national security objectives.”
Nigeria stressed the importance of technology transfer, local capacity building, maintenance capabilities and joint ventures.
The talks also covered consular and mobility issues. Nigeria emphasised the need for “predictable and transparent visa processes for Nigerian students, researchers, business persons and professionals” seeking opportunities in the Czech Republic.
Both sides acknowledged the value of people-to-people exchanges.
Views were exchanged on multilateral matters including United Nations reform, Security Council reform, international peace and security, sustainable development, climate action and digital governance, as well as greater representation for developing countries in global institutions.
The statement concluded that both countries expressed confidence in the future of Nigeria-Czech Republic relations and reaffirmed their commitment to sustained cooperation for shared prosperity.
