Nigeria hails Dr Baka’s election as Hungary’s president, pledges deeper bilateral ties

The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Dr András Baka on his election as the new President of Hungary by the Hungarian National Assembly on August 11, 2026.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria commended Baka’s distinguished judicial career and expressed confidence in his leadership to advance democratic values and strengthen Hungary’s global engagement.
The statement, signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, reads in part, “The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, on behalf of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, extends its warm congratulations to Dr. Andras Baka on his election as the new President of Hungary.”
The ministry further praised the Hungarian National Assembly for the “successful conclusion of the presidential election” and extended best wishes to Dr. Baka as he prepares to assume office.
Nigeria highlighted Dr. Baka’s extensive background in both national and international judiciary roles, including his tenure as President of Hungary’s Supreme Court and as a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights.
The statement noted, “His extensive judicial experience and commitment to the rule of law, constitutional governance, and the independence of institutions are qualities that will be valuable in discharging his responsibilities as Head of State.”
The Nigerian government expressed confidence that under President-elect Baka’s leadership, Hungary would continue to “advance democratic values, the rule of law, institutional stability and national unity,” while enhancing its constructive role in the international community.
Reaffirming the longstanding cordial ties between the two nations, Nigeria underscored its commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.
The ministry stated, “Nigeria attaches great importance to its longstanding and cordial relations with Hungary and looks forward to further deepening bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including political and diplomatic relations, trade and investment, education, culture, science and technology, and constructive people-to-people exchanges.”
The Federal Government concluded by wishing Dr. Baka a successful tenure and assuring Hungary of Nigeria’s “continued friendship and commitment to strengthening the bonds of cooperation and understanding between both countries.”
