Nike Popoola receiving award as the overall winner of the 9th Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards in Zimbabwe
Nike Popoola, a former Assistant Editor with Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper, The PUNCH, emerged as the overall winner of the 9th Pan African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards in Zimbabwe, and was announced to become a member of the judging panel of the prestigious awards. Popoola is the only finalist who won two awards at the event.
While announcing the overall winner, the Chair of the Judging Panel, Micheal Wilson, said, “This is a very special award. We have never done this before, but we thought as this award is maturing, and we are certainly enjoying this, we thought it would be a good idea to have an overall winner, who also will help us with the judging of these entries coming from all the African countries, and that person is Nike Popoola.”
“You have been a winner of this award two times and so therefore, you can’t compete anymore but, the special thing to it is that, you become a member of the judging panel,” he added.
She won with her print story titled, “After mobile phone adoption challenges, underwriters break barriers with innovations.”
Popoola’s online story, “Life annuity stirs fresh competition,” also clinched the top award in the English Online Category.
“You have a very strong understanding of your subject matter, and when a voice like yours is heard, it really works,” Wilson said, while announcing her as the winner of the online category.
Popoola is now the Editor of Daily Economy, an online media for accurate and reliable news.
The winners of the other categories were chosen from among 121 entrants from across Africa this year. Entrants spanned 18 African countries, encompassing Francophone, Anglophone, and Arabic-speaking nations, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
