The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Integration Team aimed at transforming weather forecasting and boosting service delivery nationwide.
The initiative marks a bold step toward integrating cutting-edge technology into meteorology.
Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, announced the team’s inauguration, emphasising its alignment with national priorities.
“This initiative supports the Federal Government’s digital transformation agenda and reflects the agency’s efforts to upgrade its meteorological and climate services,” Anosike stated.
He highlighted the hybrid approach at the core of the project.
“NiMet plans to combine traditional physics-based forecasting with AI technologies to enhance the accuracy, speed, and accessibility of weather information for Nigerians,” Anosike added.
The move comes amid growing demands for reliable climate data to support agriculture, aviation, and disaster management in Nigeria, where extreme weather events have intensified.
