The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) have announced the rollout of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system that will serve as a single, unified identifier for all taxable persons in Nigeria.

A statement obtained from the NRS on Monday reads, “The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) hereby notifies the public of the implementation of the Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID), in line with Sections 6,7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in Nigeria to obtain a Tax ID.”

The agencies said the move aims to “strengthen tax administration, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery across the nation’s tax system.”

The Tax ID, they added, will “enable seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub‑national levels” by consolidating taxpayer records and “eliminating duplication.”

Key benefits listed in the notice include a single tax identity for all transactions, simplified compliance for registration, filing and payment, improved transparency and tracking of taxpayer records, enhanced revenue assurance through reduced tax leakages, and data harmonization across tiers of government.

The statement also instructs Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions and other organisations using the existing TIN Validation API that the new Tax ID system will replace that API.

Organisations needing integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises and business names were advised to contact the JRB’s Standardisation and Modernisation Department at smd@jrb.gov.ng, while those seeking services for corporate entities should contact the NRS Tax Automation Department at tax.automation@nrs.gov.ng for access to the Tax ID API and integration guidelines.

The notice cites Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025 as the legal basis for the mandate requiring every taxable person to obtain the new Tax ID.
