The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has described the dispute between Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Jorge Jesus as a “misunderstanding” that will be resolved internally.
FPF president Pedro Proença said Ronaldo remained an important part of the national team and would continue to be considered whenever he was fit and available.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in history. He has dedicated more than two decades to Portuguese football and is the ultimate symbol of Portuguese identity,” Proença said.
Ronaldo recently left Portugal’s training camp following tensions sur9i’. rounding his role under Jesus.
However, Proença said the disagreement would not affect the strong relationship between the captain and the national team.
“What happened between him and Jorge Jesus was simply a misunderstanding that needs to be resolved internally,” he added.
The FPF president also insisted that Ronaldo’s presence in the national team was justified by his achievements and contributions to Portuguese football.
“Cristiano is part of the national team; he is our icon, and he captained the team in the first of the four matches,” Proença said.
He further noted that Ronaldo could have retired from international football after the World Cup but chose to continue because of his commitment to Portugal.
“Now that the four matches are over, we have the time and calm to sit down together and resolve the misunderstanding,” Proença stated.
Meanwhile, Portugal’s Economy Minister, Manuel Castro Almeida, highlighted Ronaldo’s importance to the country’s global image and economy.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has a huge impact on promoting Portugal’s image and the value of the Portuguese brand,” Almeida said.
He added, “He is the most famous person in Portugal, and many people know Portugal because of Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Proença said the federation hoped the situation would be settled before Portugal’s next international engagements in November.
“Everything that will happen in the coming days will be a time of tranquility, conversation and discussion, and what we want is for us all to be back with our national team in November,” he said.
The dispute and Ronaldo’s departure from camp have generated significant attention in Portugal, with the federation maintaining that the 41-year-old remains part of the team’s legacy.
