Presidency touts CNG transition as economic opportunity

The Nigerian Presidency has framed the country’s shift to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a major economic opportunity, pointing to more than five million commercial vehicles that can be converted as the basis for new businesses in conversion services and technical support.

In a statement seen on Wednesday, the Presidency claimed that the CNG transition is “opening new pathways for enterprise, innovation and shared prosperity,” and urged Nigerians to build businesses around conversion services while helping drivers access “a cleaner and more affordable fuel alternative.”

It outlined specific ventures including the establishment of conversion centres for tricycles, cars and trucks, alongside training programmes for young people, with conversion costs estimated between ₦75,000 and ₦150,000 per vehicle.

The initiative is being presented as part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, linking Nigeria’s natural gas resources to job creation, innovation and a broader shift toward cleaner, affordable fuel options.

“From conversion centres to technical services and supporting enterprises, the gas economy is creating opportunities for Nigerians to participate in and benefit from the nation’s evolving energy landscape,” the Presidency said.

It added that the agenda “is not only transforming how Nigeria powers its economy; it is creating new opportunities for Nigerians to build businesses, create jobs and prosper.”
