President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and appointed Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as acting IGP with immediate effect.

The announcement came via a State House press release on Tuesday, signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stating that Egbetokun cited “pressing family considerations” in his resignation letter submitted earlier today.

Appointed in June 2023 for a four-year term set to end in 2027, Egbetokun’s departure ends his tenure prematurely.

President Tinubu praised Egbetokun’s service, noting in the release, “The President expressed his profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation.

The President acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening internal security architecture during his tenure.”

Disu, lauded for his “experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity,” steps in to provide “steady and focused direction” for the force.

The President plans to convene the Nigeria Police Council soon to consider Disu’s substantive appointment, followed by Senate confirmation as required by the Police Act 2020.

“The President reiterates his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities,” the statement added.
