A senior aide to President Bola Tinubu has dismissed suggestions that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections could be postponed, describing the claims as unfounded and pointing to the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the current administration.
In a post on X on Thursday, Dada Oluwasegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media and National Convener of the PBAT Media Centre, responded to remarks by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Atiku had said he heard of plans to shift the election date “because of their Kaduna experience” and insisted the polls must hold, adding that the opposition would “vote them out.”
“There Alhaji goes again… INEC is an independent body, and it has been allowed to do its job effectively under President Tinubu without any interference or hindrance whatsoever,” the aide wrote.
He added, ““There’s no plan to postpone the 2027 general elections, and if there is, the President and our party, the APC, are neither aware of it nor involved in any such plan.”
Olusegun cited recent off-cycle governorship elections as evidence of improved electoral credibility. In the past year, polls were held in Anambra, Ekiti and Osun.
APGA’s Charles Soludo won in Anambra, the APC retained Ekiti, and Accord Party’s Ademola Adeleke won in Osun.
“Interestingly, none of the elections was challenged in court. They were so peaceful, free, fair, and credible that even those who lost had no reason to challenge the outcomes,” he stated.
He also defended the APC’s recent Kaduna rally as “a huge success,” saying party members turned out from all local government areas without inducement, and advised Atiku and his team to focus on organising their presidential campaign council, which he claimed was still struggling more than two months before the election.
Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks on Wednesday after meeting supporters in Abuja.
His comments followed the APC’s campaign flag-off in Kaduna and came amid opposition concerns about possible pressure on INEC regarding the election timetable.
The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January.
The three state elections referenced took place between late 2025 and mid-2026.
