United States President Donald Trump has on his 80th birthday announced that “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.”

Trump in a post congratulated all the parties involved and disclosed that he was taking immediate action to end what he described as a US-imposed naval chokehold on a key shipping lane.

“I hereby fully authorise the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade,” Trump wrote, adding a call to global commerce, “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

The post framed the announcement as a major policy victory for his America First agenda and appeared intended to signal a rapid normalisation of maritime trade through the Gulf.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint through which roughly a fifth of the world’s traded oil pass
