US advisers travellers to reconsider going to Saudi Arabia amid Iran threat

The United States has placed Saudi Arabia under a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” advisory, warning Americans of heightened risks from Iranian drones and missiles targeting U.S. interests following hostilities that erupted on February 28, 2026.
The State Department explicitly separated this from a stricter Level 4 “Do Not Travel” order that remains in force for the Yemen border area, where Houthi attacks continue to pose an acute threat.
Advisory language and cited risks
In its updated guidance issued on September 15, the State Department wrote, “Reconsider travel to Saudi Arabia due to risk of Iranian drone and missile targeting of American interests, armed conflict, terrorism, exit bans, and local laws regarding social media activity.”
It added that “some areas have increased risk” and directed travelers to read the full advisory before making plans.
For the southern frontier, the warning is more severe, “Do Not Travel to the Yemen border due to threat of terrorism.”
The travel alert comes against the backdrop of what U.S. officials have described as “major combat operations” against Iran launched on February 28, with joint U.S.–Israeli strikes hitting military, government and infrastructure sites.
Regional retaliation has included drone and missile threats to American interests in the Gulf, prompting Washington to recalibrate its risk messaging for Saudi Arabia.
At the same time, Houthi militants in Yemen have intensified cross-border strikes.
On September 15, Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone south of Mecca before it could enter the holy city’s prohibited airspace, the Saudi-led coalition said.
Coalition spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Malki stated the interception occurred at 6:50 p.m. local time on Tuesday, September 15, underscoring why the Yemen border retains the highest-level “Do Not Travel” designation.
