England players were left visibly moved as fans belted out an emotional rendition of Wonderwall one final time, capping a memorable but ultimately heartbreaking tournament for the Three Lions.

The moment, captured in viral footage, symbolised the pride, passion, and near-miss that defined their 2026 World Cup campaign.

England entered the tournament among the favourites under manager Thomas Tuchel.

They topped Group L with a strong showing: a 4-2 win over Croatia, a 0-0 draw with Ghana, and a 2-0 victory against Panama (where Harry Kane broke England’s all-time World Cup goalscoring record).

In the knockouts, they progressed steadily: Round of 32: 2-1 win over DR Congo. Round of 16: Thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in Mexico City. Quarter-finals: 2-1 win (AET) over Norway.

Their run ended in the semi-finals on July 15, with a gut-wrenching 2-1 loss to defending champions Argentina in Atlanta.

Anthony Gordon gave England the lead, but late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez (assisted by Lionel Messi) sent Argentina through to the final against Spain.

Saturday’s Bronze Medal Match
On July 18, England bounced back in style in the third-place playoff against France, delivering one of the most entertaining games of the tournament.

In a goal-fest that ended 6-4, Bukayo Saka scored a hat-trick (including a penalty), while goals from Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, and Jude Bellingham secured bronze, England’s best World Cup finish since their 1966 victory.

The match saw England build a commanding lead before a wild French comeback, but the Three Lions held on in a high-scoring thriller.

This result provided a fitting, proud send-off for a squad that gave everything despite falling just short of the final.

England’s campaign showcased resilience, attacking flair from stars like Kane, Bellingham, and Saka, and memorable moments that will linger for fans.

While the ultimate prize eluded them, reaching the semi-finals and claiming bronze underlined their status as a top global side.
