Speaking at the Benue Government House in Makurdi during a stakeholders meeting on June 18, 2025, Tinubu said, “How come no arrests have been made? I expect there should be arrests of those criminals. Let’s get those criminals, let’s get them out.”
The President’s remarks came amid renewed violence in the state, notably the brutal attack on the Yelwata community by suspected armed herders from Nasarawa State, which resulted in several deaths and the displacement of over 3,000 people.
Tinubu directed the Chief of Defence Staff, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and other security chiefs including the Directors-General of the National Intelligence Agency and State Security Service to retool intelligence efforts and maintain heightened vigilance.
He emphasised the need for tangible intelligence to prevent further attacks and restore peace.
He also tasked Governor Hyacinth Alia to convene reconciliation meetings and dialogue among farmers, herders, and communities to end the cycle of violence and promote harmonious coexistence.
The President described the ongoing bloodshed as “inhuman and anti-progress” and warned political and community leaders against inflammatory statements that could escalate tensions.
The visit by President Tinubu to Benue State, marked by a public holiday declaration, includes meetings with victims’ families, displaced persons, and key stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the crisis, Dailyeconomy reports.
Security forces have been deployed to coordinate operations and restore order following the President’s renewed directive to end the violence.
