Video: Lagos BRT bus bursts into flames on Third Mainland Bridge, triggers gridlock

A Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) bus went up in flames on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon, sparking panic among motorists and causing a major traffic gridlock along the busy corridor.

The incident occurred around 1:00 pm near Adekunle, inward Iyana Oworo, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Video shared online showed the high-capacity bus completely engulfed in flames as commuters kept their distance.

LASTMA confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.

However, the fire severely affected vehicular movement on the bridge, especially along the Adekunle axis, inward Iyana Oworo.

In a brief statement, the agency said, “A high capacity bus is on fire on the Third Mainland Bridge by Adekunle, inward Iyana Oworo, affecting traffic.

“Efforts are ongoing to put out the fire, while officers are on ground managing traffic.”

Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene and successfully contained and extinguished the inferno, while traffic officials continued to divert and regulate vehicles to ease the congestion caused by the incident.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been disclosed as investigations are expected to commence.
