He stressed the club’s enduring values and history amid a difficult run of results.
“This club will always be bigger than any individuals, the players, or me,” Carrick said.
He described Sir Alex Ferguson as “the greatest of all time for me” whose priority was always Man United, and praised “Sir Matt Busby and the resilience they showed” as “beyond belief,” adding, “You can’t lose that and I won’t let us lose it.”
He acknowledged the team’s recent struggles, describing Wednesday’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como as “unacceptable” and admitting the side has “gone away” from the standards expected.
He pointed to earlier progress under his management but said results and performances have not been good enough lately.
The comments come with United on a seven-game winless run across competitions and after public scrutiny of tactics from captain Bruno Fernandes following the Como loss.
Carrick, a former United midfielder who took charge after previous managerial changes, used references to club legends including Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to underline themes of humility, hard work, sacrifice and putting the team first.
United host Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday as Carrick seeks to steady the ship.
