Video: Mourinho’s 2017/18 title claim resurfaces as Man City found guilty on 115 charges

A clip of Jose Mourinho saying that Manchester United could still be awarded the 2017/18 Premier League title has gone viral among United fans on Friday, coinciding with reports that rivals Manchester City have been found guilty of nearly all of the 115 financial rule breaches brought against them.

The Portuguese manager, speaking in 2024 while in charge of Fenerbahce, reflected on his time at Old Trafford, “We won Europa League, finished second in the Premier League. I think we still have a chance to win that league, because maybe they punish Man City with points, and maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal!”

In the 2017/18 season, Pep Guardiola’s City side romped to the title with 100 points, finishing 19 points clear of Mourinho’s United, who secured second place and also lifted the Europa League.

Mourinho was later sacked the following season.

City were charged by the Premier League in February 2023 over alleged breaches spanning 2009 to 2018, including failures to provide accurate financial information, details of player and manager payments, and cooperation with the investigation.

The club has consistently denied wrongdoing.

On Friday, multiple reports stated that an independent panel has found City guilty on 114 of the 115 charges.

Sanctions have not yet been decided, and the club is expected to appeal.

City maintained that the process remains ongoing and subject to confidentiality.

While any points deduction or retrospective impact on past titles remains speculative and would face legal challenges, the timing has given fresh life to Mourinho’s light-hearted demand for his “medal.”
