In a statement shared on Monday after Morocco’s painful exit, the 24-year-old Real Madrid attacker revealed how much the defeat has affected him personally and how heavily he feels the weight of expectation from millions of supporters.
“My soul hurts. I dreamed of this title thanks to all the love you all gave me, every message, every show of support that made me feel I wasn’t alone.
“I fought with everything I had, with my heart above all else,” he wrote.
Diaz, who chose to represent Morocco at international level, did not shy away from responsibility, openly acknowledging his role in the disappointment.
“Yesterday I failed and I take full responsibility. I apologise from the bottom of my heart,” he added.
He went on to describe the emotional toll of the setback, admitting that the road to recovery will be long and difficult.
“It will be hard for me to recover, because this wound doesn’t heal easily but I will try. Not for myself, but for everyone who believed in me and for everyone who suffered with me,” he vowed.
Despite the pain, Diaz vowed to continue fighting for his adopted nation, promising to transform the current suffering into future pride for Morocco’s supporters.
“I will keep going forward until one day I can give you all this love back and become a source of pride for my Moroccan people,” he concluded.
Diaz missed a crucial penalty that could have clinched the AFCON 2025 title for Morocco against Senegal on Sunday evening.
Senegal, however, capitalised on the chance, scoring a winning goal in extra time to crown them African champions.
