Video: Oyo gets new king as Owoade crowned Alaafin

The 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, was crowned on Saturday, following the passing of the 45th Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.

The coronation ceremony took place at Olivet Baptist High School in Oyo, where Governor Seyi Makinde was present along with several other distinguished guests.
This event occurred just three years after the previous monarch, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, passed away.
During the event Makinde was seen presenting the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Owoade, to the entire world at the Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo.
Makinde, who spoke in Yoruba while presenting the new Alaafin to the crowd said, “On the 10th of January, 2025, I applied my signature for the recommendation of Oyo Mesi for Oba Akeem Owoade to be a new Alaafin of Oyo.
“And on the 13th of January, 2025, I presented a certificate of office to our Kabiyesi. I have done my work since, but today, I officially present to the entire world, the Alaafin of Oyo.
“Those who said they have not been told or heard or who are running up and down should come around and see the new Alaafin of Oyo.”
Notable attendees included the Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran; the Wife of the Oyo Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde; Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal; Deputy Osun Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi; Chief of Staff to the Ondo Governor, Prince Olusegun Omojuwa; Oyo Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin; and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, among others from the government.
President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.
Oba Owoade, who was presented with the staff of office and instrument of office on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
