Russian President Vladimir Putin stated today that Russia had warned the United States of potential consequences and requested enhanced security for American diplomats during Victory Day events.
Speaking at the scaled-back Moscow parade amid a US-brokered three-day ceasefire, Putin highlighted a swift diplomatic exchange with US President Trump.
“Russia warned the United States of consequences and asked them to ensure security of their diplomats,” Putin said.
“Then Trump proposed extra two days of truce plus a POW exchange. We agreed to that right away, respect to our common victory over Nazism.”
The agreement underscores mutual acknowledgment of the Allied victory in World War II, with Russia framing its immediate acceptance as a gesture of shared history.
Details on the POW exchange remain undisclosed, but the extension aligns with ongoing de-escalation efforts.
Trump has revealed a temporary halt to hostilities in the Russia-Ukraine war, effective May 9-11, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, Dailyeconomy reports.
The announcement, shared via Trump’s social media handle on Friday, includes a suspension of all combat and a significant exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump had written.
