United States President Donald Trump has commemorated the September 11 attacks, recalling the nearly 3,000 lives lost and linking the anniversary remembrance to ongoing efforts against Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
“On 9/11, nearly 3,000 precious souls were stolen from us, killed by evil terrorists. We will never forget,” Trump said.
He continued, “We’re right now fighting because we have a certain nation that wanted a nuclear weapon. Iran will not have a nuclear weapon.”
The remarks come just days ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks.
On September 11, 2001, often called “9/11”, 19 hijackers affiliated with terrorist group al-Qaeda carried out coordinated suicide attacks using four commercial airliners.
Two planes were deliberately flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Both towers later collapsed.
A third plane struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew attempted to regain control.
It is believed the target was a landmark in Washington, D.C.
Nearly 3,000 people were killed, the official civilian and first-responder death toll is 2,977, not including the hijackers. Thousands more were injured.
The attacks remain the deadliest terrorist incident in U.S. history and prompted major changes in American security policy, foreign policy, and the start of the global “War on Terror.”
