José Mourinho has revealed that he rejected the opportunity to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager because he had already given his word to Chelsea.

Speaking in his upcoming Netflix documentary, Mourinho said he was honoured by Manchester United’s interest after leaving Real Madrid, describing the club as one of the biggest in world football.

“When I left Real Madrid, I agreed to join Manchester United after Sir Alex. I was, of course, very flattered, because Manchester United holds an incredible allure,” Mourinho said.

The Portuguese coach acknowledged Manchester United’s global appeal but explained that his emotional connection with Chelsea influenced his decision.

“When I say that Real Madrid is the greatest club in the world, I must clarify that Manchester United is very very close,” he added.

Mourinho said his desire to feel loved by a club ultimately outweighed his ambition to take charge at Old Trafford.

“For me, losing the chance to become the manager who would succeed Sir Alex Ferguson was dramatic, but I don’t regret it, because it was a decision I made with my heart,” he added.

Ferguson also recalled offering Mourinho the Manchester United job, saying the manager initially appeared ready to accept before changing his mind.

“We offered him the job. I took him aside and explained the situation to him. From what I understood, he was on board. And then, in the space of a few hours, everything changed,” Ferguson said.

According to the former Manchester United manager, Mourinho later called him in tears to explain that he had committed to Chelsea and would not go back on his promise.

“Alex, I’ve given my word to Chelsea and I’m not going to break it.

“I understood the reason, but I was disappointed,” Mourinho reportedly told Ferguson
