Luka Modrić will probably remain with the AC Milan for the 2026–27 season, backing earlier reports that the veteran midfielder would extend his stay at San Siro.

Modrić’s previous one-year deal expired at the end of June 2026, with an option for a further season that required mutual agreement.

That uncertainty, fuelled by speculation over whether the 38-year-old might retire or move elsewhere after a busy international calendar and the recent World Cup has now been resolved.

New AC Milan manager, Rúben Amorim played a decisive role in securing Modrić’s commitment.

“I want Modrić to stay, I spoke to Luka, and if needed. I will go get him in person! I want Modrić with us this season,” Amorim said, underlining his determination to build the midfield around the Croatian maestro despite Milan’s absence from next season’s Champions League.

Earlier reports in early July 2026 suggested Modrić was leaning toward staying for 2026–27 even with Milan out of Europe’s premier competition, though retirement or alternative moves remained possibilities.

According to club sources and transfer journalist confirmations, Amorim’s direct conversations and public insistence — echoed in transfer updates helped clear up lingering doubts and paved the way for the extension.

The agreement keeps one of world football’s most decorated midfielders at San Siro for another campaign, providing Milan with experience and creativity as Amorim begins his tenure.

Club officials have not yet disclosed the financial details or the official length of the extension beyond the previously reported option; those formalities are expected to be confirmed in an upcoming club statement.
