In a decisive statement that appears aimed at quelling persistent rumours, Atlético Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has confirmed that star striker Julián Álvarez will remain at the club for the current transfer window.

“My position is clear, the club’s position is clear. We’ve made it known to the player, his representatives, and the president of Barcelona,” the CEO said.

The announcement, relayed via a breaking report from transfer expert Fabrizio Romano underscores the club’s determination to hold onto the Argentine forward despite interest from several top clubs.

“I have absolutely no doubt that Atlético is the right place in the world for Julián, and that Julián is the perfect centre-forward for Atlético Madrid. We want to keep him.

“I recently heard the president say that the offer he made to Atlético Madrid wasn’t unlimited. My only response is that our answer is unlimited.

“We do not want to transfer him. We didn’t accept an offer of €100 million, and we won’t accept one of €150 million or even €200 million,” he added.

Julián Álvarez joined Atlético Madrid from Manchester City in the summer of 2024 for a fee of up to €95 million, signing a contract until 2030. The 26-year-old has been a key performer for Los Colchoneros, netting notable goals and contributing significantly in his time at the Metropolitano.

However, the summer of 2026 has seen intense speculation around his future.

Barcelona have identified Álvarez as a priority target following Robert Lewandowski’s departure, reportedly making an initial offer around €100 million that went unanswered.

The player himself publicly stoked the flames after an Argentina World Cup match, stating, “I can’t hide it. I spoke with Atlético de Madrid, and I think a transfer is the best option. I want to fulfill my dream.”

Real Madrid also entered the fray with a reported €150 million bid, which Atlético rejected while pointing to Álvarez’s hefty €500 million release clause.

Atlético sources have expressed frustration, particularly with Barcelona, and indicated they have no intention of selling especially to direct rivals—unless an exceptional offer materialises.

Other clubs like Arsenal and PSG have shown interest, but Álvarez is understood to prioritise a move to Barcelona.

Despite his public comments and external pressure, Atlético’s leadership has remained resolute, with Gil Marín emphasising that the player is not for sale and the club is proud to have him in their squad.
