Chelsea Football Club has confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager of the men’s team, signing the Spaniard to a four-year contract that begins on July 1, 2026.

The club said in a statement on Sunday, “Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Xabi Alonso as Manager of the Men’s Team. The Spaniard will begin his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed a four-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Welcome to Chelsea, Xabi!”

Alonso arrives following a highly successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he guided the side to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and became known for a possession-based, high-pressing style influenced by his playing career at Liverpool and Real Madrid.

His appointment represents a high-profile move aimed at restoring stability after a period of managerial turnover at Stamford Bridge.

On his appointment, Alonso said, “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. From my conversations with the ownership group and sporting leadership, it is clear we share the same ambition.

“We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies. There is great talent in the squad and huge potential at this football club and it will be my great honour to lead it. Now the focus is on hard work, building the right culture and winning trophies.”

The club and new manager face an immediate challenge to translate Alonso’s tactical philosophy to a squad eager for silverware, with pre-season preparations and the transfer window set to shape the first steps of his Stamford Bridge tenure.
