Delta State police has started using portable digital breathalyser devices for on-the-spot alcohol screening of motorists as part of stepped-up efforts to reduce drunk driving and improve road safety.

A post by former Nigerian Police Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi shared photos of the handheld breathalysers and described the move as a measure to “ensure drivers are fit to operate vehicles.”

Adejobi said enforcement actions in the state already include arrests of motorists found driving under the influence.

“In Delta State, enforcement efforts include the arrest of motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.

“To strengthen road safety, breathalyzers have been deployed for on-the-spot alcohol screening, ensuring drivers are fit to operate vehicles. Our goal is simple: safer roads, responsible driving, and the protection of lives. Be warned and drive safe,” he wrote.

Police officials say the screening initiative aims to deter impaired driving, identify offenders quickly, and reduce traffic crashes linked to alcohol consumption.
