FG confirms 97% of Tinubu’s ambassadors get host approval

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 97% of the 69 ambassadors appointed by President Bola Tinubu have received approval from their host countries, with 65 already granted agrément.

The ministry said only two countries are still awaiting confirmation, while most approved envoys have already assumed duty and presented their Letters of Credence.

In a statement, the ministry said the process was “progressing smoothly and successfully,” in line with standard diplomatic practice.

According to the statement, “ninety-seven percent (97%) of the Ambassadors appointed by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, have successfully received the agrément of their respective host countries.”

It added that out of the 69 ambassador-designates screened and confirmed by the Senate, 65 have been accepted by receiving countries.

The ministry explained that the ambassador-designate to Togo declined the appointment, so no agrément request was submitted for that posting.

It also said the ambassador-designate to Algeria died in April 2026, and a replacement process is now underway.

The statement said only two countries are yet to send confirmation, but “assurances have been received from both friendly countries that their consent will be conveyed in due course.”

The ministry said it remains in contact with the relevant authorities and is confident the outstanding approvals will come through soon.

It also noted that most of the ambassadors have now arrived in their postings and formally begun work.

“It is important to note that the majority of Nigeria’s Ambassadors have already arrived in their respective host countries and have presented their Letters of Credence,” the statement added.
