Pep Guardiola has warned that the UEFA Champions League can “destroy projects” and urged Barcelona not to judge an entire season solely on their European results.
Guardiola stressed the importance of league consistency and day-to-day improvement.
“What is Barça missing to win the Champions League? The Champions League is a competition that destroys projects, and I hope that’s not the case at Barça,” Guardiola said.
He added that people should not conclude that “just because you don’t win it, everything that has been built is no good.”
The former Manchester City manager argued that success should be measured by steady domestic form.
“The league is the competition that gives you consistency and continuity,” he added.
Guardiola explained that Champions League runs require good fortune with fitness and officiating.
“In the Champions League, you need to reach the decisive stages in good condition, without injuries, and refereeing also has a huge impact,” Guardiola stressed.
He urged clubs and fans to focus on sustained progress rather than single knockout ties.
“What matters is that the daily work is excellent, that the team keeps growing and improving, and that they don’t believe the season is a failure just because they don’t reach the Champions League final or win it. The league is what sets the foundation for judging whether a season has been good or not,” Guardiola said.
Guardiola’s comments come amid ongoing debate over Barcelona’s ability to convert domestic form into European success, and reflect broader concerns among elite managers about the knockout nature of the Champions League and its capacity to abruptly alter long-term plans.
