Manchester United has held direct talks with Mateus Fernandes’ representatives and West Ham United for several weeks as transfer discussions continue over the 21-year-old midfielder.

Fernandes, who featured for a West Ham side relegated at the end of the season, has emerged as a prominent target in a crowded market for Premier League midfield reinforcements.

United’s ongoing engagement with both the player’s camp and the Hammers signals their serious interest in securing the youngster ahead of the new season.

Tottenham Hotspur have also made contact, with the club’s representatives placing a call to Fernandes’ agent to explore a possible deal.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano emphasised that Spurs’ approach is distinct from their parallel pursuit of Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali, a move for which Tottenham remain confident.

Fernandes’ stock has risen amid interest from several top clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, making him one of the more sought-after midfield prospects this summer.

Negotiations are understood to be at an early-to-mid stage, with fees and personal terms yet to be finalised as multiple suitors weigh their options.

With Premier League clubs prioritising midfield upgrades, Fernandes’ situation will be watched closely in the coming weeks as United, Spurs and other interested parties look to accelerate talks before the transfer window heats up.
