Manchester City has agreed a €20 million settlement with Chelsea to terminate Enzo Maresca’s contract, clearing the way for the Italian coach to return to the Etihad as Pep Guardiola’s successor, Dailyeconomy gathered.
The agreement will allow Maresca to sign a three-year deal with City.
He is expected to travel to Manchester imminently to finalise terms and be formally introduced.
Familiar face returns
Maresca reunites with City after serving as Guardiola’s assistant during the club’s treble-winning 2022–23 campaign.
That spell, City insiders say, gave Maresca an intimate understanding of the club’s tactical identity and standards, factors that reportedly appealed strongly to City’s hierarchy when planning succession.
Since leaving City, Maresca held head-coaching roles at Leicester City and most recently Chelsea, where he was under contract until the agreement with City.
The €20m payment to Chelsea is being described as compensation to terminate the remaining length of his deal and facilitate his immediate move to Manchester.
