Manchester United has acquired a 25-acre plot from industrial owner Indurent located about 350 metres north-west of Old Trafford, the club confirmed oday, marking a major step toward its long-term plan to build a new 100,000-seat stadium.

The purchase secures the majority of the land the club says is needed for the proposed venue, a project championed by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and designed by architecture firm Foster + Partners.

The new stadium would replace or significantly upgrade the current Old Trafford, which has a capacity of roughly 74,000.
Club officials described the acquisition as a pivotal milestone that advances wider Greater Manchester regeneration ambitions tied to the scheme.

The move also shifts the project away from earlier, complex negotiations involving Freightliner, clearing a key obstacle and positioning the development for potential construction in the coming years.

Manchester United said the land purchase “secures the majority of the site required” for the stadium, without giving a definitive timeline for planning submissions or the start of construction.

The confirmation is likely to intensify public and political debate around transport, local housing, and economic benefits for the Trafford area as plans move forward.

The club has previously highlighted the stadium’s potential to create jobs, boost local investment and deliver public realm improvements.
