The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) are advocating for stronger synergy with media editors to accelerate growth in the insurance and pension sectors.
Both organizations made the call on Thursday during the investiture ceremony of the new executive committee of the Nigerian Association of Insurance and Pension Editors (NAIPE) in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The newly inaugurated executive members include Mrs. Ebere Nwoji (Chairperson), Ms. Adenike Popoola (Vice Chairperson), Mr. Zaka Khaliq (General Secretary), Mr. Sunday Ojeme (Treasurer), Mr. Bankole Orimisan, and Mr. Henry Uche (Public Relations Officer).
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Insurance and CEO of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, stated that sustained partnerships between regulators, the media, and operators are critical to deepening market penetration and building public confidence.
Omosehin, who was represented by the Head of NAICOM’s Lagos Office, Dr. Julius Odidi, urged NAIPE members to embrace investigative and interpretative journalism to break down complex industry concepts for ordinary citizens.
“The developmental agenda of NAICOM is anchored on reforms that strengthen regulation, deepen market penetration, and enhance consumer protection,” Omosehin said.
“These reforms ranging from digital transformation, risk-based supervision, financial inclusion, to pension integration require effective communication. This is where synergy with NAIPE becomes indispensable.”
Similarly, the Chairperson of the NIA, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, represented by the Director-General and CEO of NIA, Mrs. Bola Odukale, expressed optimism about the new leadership.
She reaffirmed the NIA’s commitment to strategic partnerships through continuous engagement and knowledge sharing to promote the value of insurance nationwide.
In her acceptance speech, the newly elected NAIPE Chairperson, Mrs. Ebere Nwoji, promised that her administration would focus on unity and comprehensive coverage of both sectors to propagate long-term savings and financial security.Nwoji, however, challenged operators to earn public trust by fulfilling claims and maintaining utmost good faith.
She noted that the pension sector still has a long way to go in winning public confidence regarding the seamless payout of retirement funds.
“I want to encourage everyone to gird up their belts and search for critical information, especially regarding the ongoing recapitalization, to keep the public well-informed,” Nwoji concluded.
