The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by Akinteye Afeez, has opened formal talks with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to strengthen access to justice, bail assistance and rehabilitation pathways for students detained in correctional centres nationwide.

This was made in a statement signed by Obidah David, National Public Relations Officer, NANS.

The engagement, described by NANS as a strategic effort to protect the rights and futures of students focused on practical collaboration areas including expedited consideration of eligible student bail applications, legal guidance for detained students, and welfare and rehabilitation programmes designed to keep learners connected to education and family while due process runs its course.

“Student welfare goes beyond the classroom. Every student deserves fair treatment, access to justice, and support systems that protect their future,” NANS President Afeez said.

He stressed that timely access to bail, where legally appropriate, can prevent needless disruption to education and preserve students’ personal development and societal ties.

NANS officials commended the NCoS leadership for its openness to partnership and for embracing humane, reformative approaches to correctional administration. Both sides explored joint support mechanisms aimed at ensuring detained students receive legal counsel, welfare interventions and rehabilitation opportunities that facilitate reintegration and continued learning.

Reaffirming its role as an advocate for learners, NANS signalled its intent to deepen cooperation with government institutions, security agencies and stakeholders to promote student safety, justice and a more inclusive educational environment across Nigeria.
